A Gardening Assistance Program About 16.7 million children lived in households classified as food insecure in 2011 (Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics 2013). Food insecurity is limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways (Coleman-Jensen, A. Nord, M., 2013). There is a way for the United States to help these families in need besides just giving them financial assistance; they could create a program focused on educating families on a healthier lifestyle and helping them start a self-sufficiency garden or implementing a community garden program. There is a direct relationship between poverty, obesity, and the low cost of high energy dense foods vs. high cost of nutrient rich foods. Even though there are government funded food programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP formally known as the food stamp program), Women, Infant and Children (WIC), Child Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and more, none of them are geared towards the right objective; getting Americans to realize they can become self-sufficient and healthy all on their own. Programs like these give financial support and offer education to people who qualify, but they do not put enough emphasis on or do enough to make these educational aspects a necessity.
